We all dislike having to purchase the additional insurance whenever we rent a vehicle. Assuming you have Liability, Collision and Comprehensive on your Personal Automobile Policy – then your Personal Auto Policy can provide coverage for the short-term rental (generally less than 10 days) or a personal auto type vehicle.
It most-likely will not provide coverage for a heavier or commercial type vehicle.
However, we recommend that our clients always purchase the Collision Damage Waiver from the Rental Company. This is purely a matter of preference and as long as there is no damage all is fine. The first issue is that the rental car company has the right, granted by you in their contract, to charge your credit card for their estimate of the damages. This can be inconvenient and time-consuming, especially if you are on an extended trip or vacation. It also means this claim will show up as a claim on your personal auto policy and you have very little, if any control over the matter.
